Eighty percent of surveyed cancer survivors made changes to the food that they eat and regarded diet as being an important part of their holistic treatment plan. They moved to a diet that was richer in fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Most consumed nutritional foods that contained the requisite vitamins and minerals. They also drank more teas and pure water. At the same time survivors replaced meals made from ‘white’ foods such as sugar, white rice, white flour and white potatoes with ‘coloured’ foods such as grains, fruits and vegetables.

Diet and Cancer

Diet is linked to 30 to 40 percent of cancers. -
Being obese is a major risk factor for the development of cancer and negatively impacts successful treatment. -
A dinner plate should consist of 60 percent or more vegetables, whole grains or fruit and 30 percent or less animal protein. -

A healthy diet should include foods rich in omega 3, such as fatty fish. |

Try to remain lean whilst not being underweight. -
Eliminate processed foods and sugary drinks which are low in fiber and hign in added sugars and fats. -
Eat a range of colourful fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes such as peas, lentils and beans -
Limit alcohol consumption. -
Eat less salty foods. |

Adequate nutrition before, during and after treatment is important, as your body needs sufficient vitamins, minerals, calories and protein. If you are struggling with your appetite, try to eat slowly in a relaxed atmosphere. You could also discuss with a health professional the possible use of nutritional supplements. Not eating the right foods or drinking sufficient liquids, particularly water, could increase problems such as fatigue, nausea, diarrhea or constipation. |
